A Vehicle Power of Attorney is one of the most practical legal tools available to vehicle owners in the UAE. It places meaningful authority in the hands of your appointed attorney, and when prepared correctly, it enables smooth vehicle transactions from anywhere in the world. However, a poorly drafted or incomplete Vehicle Power of Attorney can result in rejection at the RTA or Traffic Department, costly delays, and potential disputes over the scope of the attorney’s authority.
The following five tips will help you arrange a secure, effective, and enforceable Vehicle Power of Attorney in Dubai and across the UAE.
1. Ensure the Document is Drafted by a UAE Legal Professional
A Vehicle Power of Attorney that is drafted by a UAE-based law firm ensures full compliance with local laws, the requirements of the relevant Traffic Department, and the RTA’s standards. Generic templates or documents drafted abroad frequently contain missing clauses, incorrect wording, or vague descriptions of the vehicle and granted powers, all of which can result in outright rejection.
A professional law firm like Legal Inz drafts every Vehicle POA from scratch, tailored to your specific vehicle details and the exact scope of authority you wish to grant, so there are no surprises at the Traffic Department counter.
2. Know Which Powers to Include
A Vehicle Power of Attorney can be drafted to cover a broad or narrow set of powers, depending on your needs. Common powers include selling and transferring ownership of the vehicle, registering or renewing registration, settling outstanding traffic fines, exporting the vehicle outside the UAE, insuring and renewing insurance, collecting sale proceeds, and representing you before the RTA, DoT, SRTA, and other relevant UAE transport and licensing authorities.
Be deliberate about which powers you include. Granting broader powers than necessary introduces unnecessary risk. Our legal team at Legal Inz will advise you on the appropriate scope for your specific situation.
3. Choose Your Attorney Carefully
Your attorney will be authorised to sign transfer documents, collect vehicle sale proceeds, and interact with UAE government departments on your behalf. This is significant legal authority. Choose someone who is not only trustworthy but also practically capable of carrying out the required tasks, ideally someone who understands the UAE traffic and licensing system or is willing to engage a professional to assist.
If you do not have a suitable person in the UAE, Legal Inz offers attorney representation services through our own qualified professionals, giving you full peace of mind from abroad.
4. Check Your Vehicle Registration Status Before You Begin
While a valid vehicle registration card makes the process smoother, an expired registration does not automatically prevent you from proceeding. Under a General Vehicle POA, expired registrations can still be accepted, though higher government fees will apply. This exception is limited to expired registrations only, so it is worth clarifying your specific situation with a legal consultant before assuming you need to renew first.
Similarly, ensure there are no outstanding traffic fines, unpaid loan balances, or encumbrances on the vehicle that could block the transfer of ownership. These should be cleared in advance so your attorney can proceed without obstruction once they have the document in hand.
5. Request a Bilingual (English and Arabic) Version
All Vehicle Powers of Attorney in the UAE must include an Arabic version. This is mandatory for acceptance by the Notary Public and all UAE government departments. However, if you are not an Arabic speaker, we strongly recommend requesting the bilingual English-Arabic format. This way, you can fully review the document in English before approving the Arabic version that goes to the Notary Public, eliminating the risk of misunderstandings or unintended powers being granted.
At Legal Inz, certified Arabic translation by a Ministry of Justice-accredited translator is included as part of our Vehicle Power of Attorney service.
